Demystifying Roofing Terminology: A Guide for Homeowners Part 1

Roof repairs and/or replacements is a significant consideration for homeowners, often requiring careful planning and investment. When you begin researching and connecting with local roofing contractors, understanding the terminology they use can sometimes feel like navigating a foreign language. Fear not!

We've compiled a comprehensive guide to common roofing terms you're likely to encounter during your discussions with contractors. Our goal is to empower you with knowledge so that you can confidently communicate and make informed decisions about your roofing project. Below are eight roofing terms to familiarize yourself with.

Eaves

Eaves are the horizontal edges of your roof. They extend horizontally from the roof structure and provide protection from the elements, such as rain, sun, and ice. Think of it as where the roof meets the gutters.

Rakes

Rakes are the sloped edges that run from the eaves to the ridge. Rakes are very similar to eaves. To tell them apart, remember: rakes are always at an angle, whereas eaves are completely horizontal.

Roof Facets

Roof facets refer to the individual surfaces or planes that make up the sloping sections of a roof. A more complex roof with have more facets.

Roof Pitch

Roof pitch refers to the steepness or slope of your roof. It is typically expressed in fraction or ratio such as 4/12 or 4:12, where the first number is the rise in inches for every 12 inches of horizontal run. So, a 4/12 pitch will rise 4 feet for every 12 feet of length. A higher number indicates a steeper roof.

Shingles

Shingles are the outer layer of your roof, consisting of overlapping elements that shed water away from the structure. They come in various materials like asphalt, wood, metal, and slate, each with its own aesthetic and durability characteristics.

Flashing

Flashing is a critical component that prevents water from seeping into vulnerable areas of the roof, such as around chimneys, skylights, and vents. It is typically made of metal and installed to create a watertight barrier.

Underlayment

Underlayment is a protective layer installed directly onto the roof deck before shingles are laid. It serves as an extra barrier against water penetration and helps to extend the life of the roof system.

Ridge

The ridge is the highest point where two roof slopes meet. Ridge vents are often installed along this line to allow for proper ventilation and airflow in the attic, helping to regulate temperature and moisture levels.
