How to Keep an Attic Cool in the Summer

Georgia summer heat is a force to be reckoned with, and your attic is going to lose the battle if you don't take steps to cool your attic space down. Though we're sure you can come up with a few other more aesthetically pleasing ways to spend your money, this is an investment that can truly make a difference as it keeps your home/attic cooler in the summer and also reduces your power bill. There are several different ways to accomplish this, but we're going to look at how attic insulation works and the long-term benefits.

5 Reasons Why You Need Attic Insulation

  1. Lowers bills. If you can reduce the amount of heat seeping into your attic and thus into your home, you will be able to reduce the use of your AC unit. This, of course, lowers your power bill and who wouldn't want that!
  2. Prevents gradual damage to home. Excessive heat in your attic can cause various issues including a shortened lifespan of your shingles, damage to items stored in the attic, and potential moisture problems. Attempting to cool off your attic can help you minimize or avoid these issues entirely. Repairing damage to your home and replacing personal items is an expensive and tedious task.
  3. Better air quality. As stated above, moisture can become a problem when your attic space gets too hot. Eventually, mold and mildew will form in your attic space and affect your air quality. Mold remediation can be a costly venture, so it's best to be proactive instead of reactive.
  4. Slows heat buildup. Attic insulation can greatly reduce the amount of heat your roof absorbs into your attic. Preventing heat buildup can come in handy when it comes to your HVAC system too.
  5. Helps HVAC last longer. Hot summers mean that your AC is working overtime…unless you can minimize the excessive use of your HVAC system. Attic insulation helps keep your home cooler and prevents your AC from overworking itself.

Points to Consider

As you look into replacing or adding attic insulation, keep these things in mind:
  • If you already have attic insulation, is it still good? An attic inspection should be completed once a year, and the insulation should be checked to determine if new insulation is needed. You should also check for mold and mildew if you're aware or suspicious of a possible leak in your roof.
  • You should fix any leaks in your roof before you invest in attic insulation. If any moisture gets into your attic, it will be a breeding ground for mold.
  • Do your research and try to determine which kind of attic insulation would be best for your home. There are different options and opinions, but it's worth looking into what seems to be most effective.
